About the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Food Stamps

Commonly called "food stamps," the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides a monthly allowance to recipients to buy eligible food items from retailers that accept the SNAP EBT card. Resource and income limits determine eligibility to receive SNAP benefits. The resource and income limits are updated each year. There are special SNAP rules for households with elderly or disabled members.
